Between 1587 and 1590, members of the English colony of Roanoke Island (Dare County, North Carolina present, United States) disappeared leaving no trace that a written word on a tree: "Croatoan".

A few weeks ago, a team of archaeologists from the "First Colony Foundation" published research that tries to answer the big question about the fate of this population. His hypothesis planet that settlers would have merged with a native population. A group of objects found within 80 kilometers of Roanoke underpin this theory.

The story is this: in 1587 he came to Roanoke Island a British mission, led by John White, with orders to establish a colony there. The settlers were men and women prepared to work the land. 90 men, 17 women and 11 children were installed, and White returned to Britain. When he returned to the island in 1590, he found no one there, nor any trace of their presence. Research has shown that the houses had been dismantled, but no signal was found fighting.

In 2012, the British Museum found on an old map drawn by White a series of marks that indicated the existence of an alleged stronghold 80 kilometers from the colony. Researchers went there and found a number of items: ceramics English style metal tools, European swords and primitive muskets, all dating from the XVI century. Had they belonged to the inhabitants of Roanote?

Specialists estimate and added that the settlers would have joined with a group of native Indians probably Croatoan, which would explain the meaning of the inscription found.
