Better faster than attractive: how females choose their mates.

Let's know how females choose their mates.

A study recently conducted by Mike Ryan and Amanda Lea, biologists at the University of Texas, up to a startling conclusion on the theory of sexual selection. Analyzing the behavior of female frogs could see that rational choice models are not as effective as previously thought: they demonstrated that, in the trouble, not always the most attractive option for mating is chosen.

The article published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science, explains that the model in which the females choose their reproductive partner for the appeal no longer serves to explain the decisions in areas of socially complex mating.

The experiment was conducted with 80 female frogs, which were faced with different male calls; scientists warned that their preference varied if they had to choose between two options, or if it appeared a third option, which precipitated the election by one of the males that had previously not been the most attractive.

For authors, this shows that rational decisions may be time, jeopardizing the opportunity to mate, and increasing exposure to predators, so it is not the ideal method in complex social situations. This study shows the important influence of context on the choice of sexual partner and, as this effect has been shown in humans, mean that irrationality linked to sexuality may have biological roots.
