Closer to the Apocalypse: antibiotic immune diseases may end the human species.

Recent research has revealed the existence of a new threat to humanity as important as war, famine or climate change. This is the "superbugs", causing diseases that modern medicine is unable to treat.

The defense against this threat is, paradoxically, the same as its source. According to Antony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Health, USA, indiscriminate use of antibiotics is causing more bacteria become resistant to them every time. The trend indicates that, before long, simple diseases or infections will become impossible to treat.

One of the protagonists of this story is alarming bacteria CRE group. Known among experts as "nightmare bacteria," the CRE are immune to most antibiotics and responsible for deadly diseases. The curious thing about this family of germs is located, in most cases, in hospitals and health centers.

Adam Roberts, a doctor of the University College London, predicts that the lack of medical treatments against superbugs as well as causing more and more deaths from disease, will cause severe social conflict in the near future. While Roberts is launched to search for new antibiotics to avoid this crisis, some experts propose a diametrically opposite solution: reduce the use of existing, raising awareness among both consumers and doctors prescribed.
