Nearly 200 people were recently punished in China for spreading false reports on the Internet, local media reported. Among warned citizens in a Chinese government campaign against Internet rumors, there are those who reported an inflated number of deaths in Tianjin explosions and an alleged suicide because of the stock market crash.
The official Xinhua news agency quoted the Public Security Department to report that 197 people were punished for a special campaign, but did not specify over what period of time. Over the past two years, authorities have launched a campaign to stop false rumors in Internet China, noting that it takes to end the unethical and improper online behavior. Critics say the campaign also aims to suppress criticism of the Communist Party.
In the last phase of this campaign 165 online accounts were closed, Xinhua quoted the department said. Among the rumors circulating is the "man who committed suicide in Beijing due to the stock market crash" and that "at least 1,300 people died in the blasts of Tianjin". Until Monday the official death toll from the August 12 explosions in a warehouse of hazardous materials is 158.
The department added that some of the people were punished for spreading seditious rumors about upcoming commemorations of the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II, to be held Thursday in China, with a large military parade in Beijing.
